In today's society, it is very important for children to be taught
bilingually, including children whose primary language is English. What do
you think the best way is for this to be accomplished?
With Prop. 13, California's education system has lower funding than the
national average. Do you think the problem we now have is from this lack
of funding or from the wrong allocation of resources or a combination of
both? What do you think the best solution would be?

I think the best way to accomplish bilinguality in schools would be to teach the language as if it were anyother regular subject such as english or math. With start this system at a very young age and having it in their everyday lives children will learn the language a lot easier than if they were only taught it two years in high school. I think it is a great idea to teach children a second language since our society is so diverse, it will help the children a lot in their future and it will help our country if people knew more than english. Children in other countries know more than one language, which they are taught in school at a young age. If these other countries can teach their children more than one language, why can the USA?
To be honest...I think that a language like Spanish should be introduced in Elementary school. I am not sure of the legalities of doing something like this, but a child's mind is more susceptible to learning at a younger age. The younger a child attempts to learn Spanish, the better he/she should be able to speak it. The best solution to integrating multiple languages into schools is when the children are young. If children know or understand Spanish, they can probably understand other romance languages like Latin or French. In high school or middle school the child can pick for himself/herself to take the language of their choice. I feel that taking a language in elementary school would have benefited me more than me learning it in high school when I could no longer really "soak it up" anymore.
From a very young age they need to be taught two different languages. That would be the best way. thats how i learned. Spanish was my first language and its just about a neccessary lenguage her in california. The education is very demanding of the budget. It will be hard for the money that was going into education to keep putting into education after this recession. No place will get the same amount of money as before. I do not know what the best solution will be. the allocation of funds will not be the same nor will ever be equal.
I believe that the problem lies with both lack of funding and the wrong allocation of funds. There is clearly a problem if schools can't buy new textbooks but they can buy a new stadium, or that we have allowed the schools in the poorer communities to become so dilapidated. The State gives a lot of the money to the school based on attendance, but this is causing schools to care less about the kids who are in trouble and not coming, forcing them to drop out or into continuation high schools where they drop out in order to keep the attendance ration high. This is doing a great disservice to the children in California. I think that the way funds are allocated to schools and the programs which they are allocated to should be reevaluated. We should want all of our schools to do well, not just those with the best attendance or the ones in the best areas.
