Kaitlyn's Questions

1. What do you think California can do fix the water problem? Do you
think people actually hold up to only using what is necessary usage of
water? Do you think people hold up to conserving their water? What else
could we do to help our drout?

2. Do you think the current system of water federalism is ready for the
future of California? What ways can you think of to manage California
water resources?

I do not think that there is a fix to the water problem. Being that California is a desert and we live in some form of perpetual drought, it doesn't seem like anything short of magically making more water will fix the issue. You can ask people to conserve water and even monitor and fine them, but there is no way to force someone to conserve. During the "great drought" of 1992 I remember my neighbor watering his lawn in the dead of night when he thought no one would notice because he can't stand it to look bad. People do not realize that much of the greenery we see in landscaping around this state is unnatural and would not, for one second, survive on its own without man made irrigation. Grass does not readily grow in the desert, and in order to keep it green in many areas of California is to abundantly water it. We, as a culture, have also become very prideful in what we own, and want our belongings to look nice- whether that's the lawn, or a car that you wash every Friday, or even the super long shower everyone enjoys. All of these things would have to be taken down a notch in order to preserve water, and many people aren't willing to give up the ascetics, even at the risk of wasting a finite precious resource. I think that it is going to take some form of major catastrophe for people to realize how much wasting water huts us.
